About the Cosmic Odometer

What this tool is, what standards it calculates by, and why it was made.

What is this tool?

The Cosmic Odometer is a free web tool that calculates, in real time, how far you have traveled through space since you were born — through Earth's orbit, the solar system's galactic orbit, and Earth's spin. It also shows days and seconds alive, estimated heartbeats and breaths, and the distance traveled since you opened the page.

Standards and sources

Orbital speed uses NASA's mean orbital velocity for Earth, 29.78 km/s. Galactic orbital speed uses the commonly cited approximation of about 230 km/s. Spin uses 465.1 m/s, the equatorial circumference divided by the sidereal day. Because real orbits are elliptical, the results are estimates; the guide explains the basis in detail.

Why was it built?

The fact that we move through space at about 260 km per second even while sitting still feels very different when you see your own number climbing past hundreds of billions of kilometers. This site exists to make that scale tangible — and fun to check.
